subscription box review

sooooooooooooooo.
Emmy is 19 months.  I just realized it's been 10 months since my last post.
Let's see how long the next post will take :)

In the multiple blogs I read, subscription boxes are all the rage.  Subscription boxes are usually themed or grouped by similar items sent monthly.  The fun part is you don't know what you're going to get and it's a surprise.  I've seen boxes for just about everything.  there's clothes, makeup, tea, for your dogs, and even socks.  Why you would need a monthly box of surprise socks for like $30 is beyond me and also I wish I had the extra money like that.

Anyways, so i'm terrible at picking out toys for Em bc when I go to toy stores, they all look the same.  I tried a subscription box (to remain nameless) couple of months ago after reading some reviews and I was really disappointed.  It was around when she was about a year and in the box, there were 2 rattles.  two!  I don't think I used a single thing in the box.  I immediately canceled the next month's subscription and rode off boxes forever.

Fast forward to now, I found a coupon code for citrus lane which would have put me at $9 for the first box.  Even if the box was a complete fluke like my previous one, I figured I wouldn't be losing anything for $9.

here's my honest review.

I filled out Em's profile online.  One of the things I did was age her up one year.  I got a box for a 2-3 year old.  I figured it's better than getting something  babyish (like rattles) and if the item wasn't age appropriate, I could save it for later.  Also, Emmy is pretty smart :)

This month's box was centered around eco-friendly products because of  Earth day.

1)build a bouquet toy. (~$14)

When I first saw this packaging, I was like "eh?  what is this?"  I'm happy to report that Emmy loves this!  She will spend hours (well, more like minutes) playing with this by herself and as any parent will tell you, that is a huge blessing!  These are flower petals, stems, and leaf pieces that you can stack on top of each other. It can even help Em with her fine motor skills.  Honestly, I wouldn't have picked this toy up at the store, especially for $14 and to have found this toy was great!  (this item is made exclusively for Citrus Lane and the actual toy sold is $27.95. Because we only got about half of what's in the picture, I cut the price in half.)

2)Tumbler 2 Pack ($5.95)
We are not quite comfortable using cups yet (Emmy needs some sort of top on her drink cups) but this is something I saved for later.  Again, I prob wouldn't have bought this in the store but it's very environmentally friendly, colorful, and something she will most likely use.

Again, a book I probably wouldn't have picked up.  It's also a paperback book and we have been mostly reading from heavy, board books.  Emmy was extra cranky today bc she has 8 teeth coming in so I took this book out and read it to her.  It's really cute.  Each page is a about a month of the year.  There are words in the bottom of the page that she can look for the picture too.  Even though she's only 19 months, she was able to find some basic things like dogs, trees, flowers, etc.  I can see us reading this even at older ages where she would be able to find harder things like goggles, beehive, streamers.  The book also had additional information in the back about how the months of the year were named and the reasoning of changing seasons.  I may or may have not spent 5 minutes reading this book to myself even after Emmy got up and walked away ;)

4)Ms. Myers travel sized dish soap ($1)
I can't find a picture or a link but I love Mrs. Myers products and buy it for everyday use.  I've seen the travel sized ones at Target for a dollar.  Traveling with baby requires you to bring your own dish soap.  I would def have bought this for a trip we have planned in the summer.

One greeting card gift code to use from Treat.com

All in all, the total came out to be $28.94 which wasn't bad considering I only paid $9 with a coupon code.  The flower toy was worth it just by itself too.  The boxes renews automatically unless you cancel before the first of the month.  Regular monthly subscription prices are $29 and if I paid that much, I wouldn't have been happy with the box.  I called the customer service to cancel right away and explained it to them.  They were incredibly friendly and super helpful.  They lowered the price for the next 3 boxes to $15 a box!   Okay, now I'm sold on subscription boxes!
